Ode to Oreo
I created this blog a few weeks ago, but then never posted and then frankly life got in the way and I completely forgot about it. For the two or three of you that followed my old blog, you knew that I was thinking about starting a new one. I wanted to create a blog where I talk about good things in this world, things that make me happy. This is kind of like my own personal happiness project. So often so many people focus on what is wrong. I am guilty of this big time, but you know what? It is time to focus on what is right and good with the world and my little part of it.
It is perfect that I start my blog with writing about the number one thing I have been complaining about for the past month. I have a dog named Oreo. I love this dog. She has destroyed almost everything in our house, and I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown about a week and a half ago because of it, but I have since changed my prospective. I decided instead of giving up on those cute little puppy dog eyes, and cold wet nose, I would work to fix the problem. I read about how many rescue dogs (which Oreo is) feel anxiety when their master is gone too long. They start to get nervous and feel like they are being abandoned again. This changed my attitude completely. I went from being angry to feeling sorry for Oreo.
Now when I leave the house I pet Oreo and tell her "I'll be right back," and when I come home I explain to her how "I said I would be back, and look I came home." Yes, it makes me feel silly talking to my baby like she is...well...a baby, but it works. I also leave a few articles of my clothing scattered around the house when I leave. I read that it comforts dogs to smell you when you are away. So everyday before I leave I place some of my laundry in her cage, in the living room, and in the kitchen by the garbage can. Everyday I come home, my clothes are in different spots then where I left them. They are not destroyed or chewed up, they are simply moved to a different location in the house. It makes my smile thinking of Oreo walking around the house carrying my Professor Bear pajamas around like Linus carries his blanket. Anyway, I am happy to say that Oreo has not had an issue destroying the house in a week and a half.
A lesson has been learned here. I was having a huge problem that was putting me on edge every single day, and all I had to do was change my perspective to get a different result.
